Marriages in Africa are a huge family affair and they relate to every member of the family in a special way. They induce each and every person in its charm and involve them to the fullest. There is a huge amount of responsibility and duty involved when it comes to the marriage of two people. As it is a bond for the whole life, it dominates every other aspect of one’s life. The marriage is considered to be a scared thing in African deserts where cultures, customs and traditions matter the most of all. Even though the popular culture is modernizing here in Africa too but still when it comes the time of such a personal and family affair the traditions are regarded with the utmost importance.

The families bond together before the arrangement of marriage and thus two families merge into a single one. The bride in African marriage is considered to be of utmost importance. The bride is treated with immense love and respect and is given all the comfort and luxury that can be provided. A woman about to get married is given all the respect in the world. Ever since the ancient times, women have always been considered to be given supreme respect. They are the beings who hold a vital connection between the ancient ancestors and the unborn generations to come. They are the ones who will give birth to children who can be powerful, influential or who can change history.

The mother to be is thus the most important person when it comes to the respect of traditions. This is on such a large extent that when it comes to marriage ceremony and the married life it is not the girl who has to leave her roots and get settled in a new place rather the groom’s family uproots their home and settle at the brides place of birth to treat her with respect. The bride is also subjected to a family council where the elders meet her to advise her about the marital relations and the importance of holding a family together. She is given gifts and blessings for her marriage life. The ceremonies are the most colorful and exciting ever.

The brides are tattooed with different symbols. A priest is present at the wedding. The groom with his friends enters the bride house singing traditional music loudly and perfuming the house of bride. The bride is valued highly but she has no part in inheritance of her husband. The children she bore have the right of inheritance.

Family is a most important unit in Africa and it has a distant affect on the cultural development of African society.
