Statistics show us, that most accidental deaths in the US, occur through automobile accidents and a fantastic number of these happen in drive-ways, outside homes. Most of these unfortunately, involve children. Do we take as much care as we do in a busy intersection, or do we drop our guard because we are almost home? We as adults must realise, that if children are around, then it is the responsibility of the adults, to keep the children safe. Yes, it is the parents’ responsibility to teach their children road safety, but children being children need to be guided and taken care of, by the adults around them.
If a child is indeed involved in an accident, then anybody with an iota of sensibility will understand the grief and emotional trauma, the parents and relatives of that child will go through. Nobody can blame them if they choose to knock on the doors of justice and seek retribution. Don’t you think they would deserve it? Is there anybody in the world who would feel otherwise? Yes, agreed parents need to keep their children safe, but we live in a society and every member of said society has the responsibility to see that no child in his vicinity comes to any harm. Anybody behind the wheel of an automobile is responsible for driving it safely.
Just as we take our responsibility while driving and to our society in general, seriously, we have every right to question, reprimand, and take to task, anyone who does not take these responsibilities seriously and puts others’ lives at risk. We have the right to take such people to court and make them pay heavily. Perhaps then there would be fewer cases of speeding, rash driving, drunken driving, signal jumping and plain careless driving. There are horrendous stories of children or old people being run over at road crossings. Many even hit and run cases. Young adults may have the quick reflexes required to jump out of the way of an arrogant speeding nut case. But the very young or the very old may well display the ‘caught in the headlights’ syndrome, and stand in the middle of the road, too scared to move.
